When you least expect it…

I’ve been in Kenya for about 7 months now, and I just came home a few weeks ago. This past Monday, I started back to the office. I was a little nervous about going back to a more structured work schedule, so I prayed for strength and encouragement and then stopped by a Starbucks to get some energy (I will say that I missed Toffeenut Latte’s when in Kenya!)

That day, I happened to be wearing my Daraja classic tee and the guy behind the counter asked “Where did you see them in concert?”

Wow! That was encouraging! Someone who knew about Daraja!  So, I told him that I had been the logistics coordinator on the road with them for 4 years.

“Oh!”, he said. “Well, my brother saw them at a camp one summer and now he’s studying to be a civil engineer so that he can help the people of Kenya. Thanks so much for what you’re doing!”

I have to say, I was blown away and really encouraged. Not only did God cross our paths so that we could share encouragement on my first day back at the grind… but God also revealed that even when we least expect it, He is up to huge things. That student at camp was one of a hundred thousand people who worshiped with the Daraja Choir in their 07-2010 tours… and his life was changed. What else could be going on in the lives of the other 99,999 people?!?  Our God is a HUGE God, and He works everything out for good.

If you have the time to encourage others and share how God used them in your life… Do it! Not only can it be greatly encouraging, but it lifts God high!!!

  A Note from Our Founder

If we’ve spent any time together, you’ve probably heard me this before: pay attention to who walks through the front door.

That was some early advice from my friend, Lanny, and it held the test of time. It’s important to keep a lookout for people suddenly crossing your path – God just might be introducing you to someone special. So, when Chris Joiner walked through our front door, I paid attention.

In 2021, Chris reached out just to have a conversation. Over a few breakfasts, Chris and I discussed our shared passion for changing the way the West church engages the poor. At the time, Chris was working for another non-profit organization, but it quickly became clear that we both sought to create a lasting, meaningful impact on the lives of the poor.
