When The Going Gets Tough…

Things are extra tough in Kenya right now!  You may have heard that Kenya is experiencing one of the worst droughts in their history.   Crops have failed, water sources are drying up, food is scarce, and people are suffering in a major way.  In the 410 Bridge community of Ngaamba, things are so desperate that schools are shutting down due to a scarcity of food throughout the community.   In the midst of this growing crisis, two 410 Bridge communities have answered the call to serve in a major way.

Karima and Kwambekenya are neighboring communities located at the base of the Aberdare Mountains in the central area of Kenya.  While still experiencing drought, this area has received enough rain to sustain crops and yield a harvest.  Last week, the leadership in these two communities asked us if we would fund the transport of a load of potatoes in a seven-ton truck from Kwambekenya/Karima to the community of Ngaamba.  The communities will supply a truckload of potatoes, if we supply the transport.  To see communities making real sacrifices to help other communities is amazing.  (Huge Win!)

This reminds me of a story…

“He looked up and saw rich people putting their gifts into the treasury; he also saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. He said, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; for all of them have contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.” Luke 21: 1-4

These potatoes will be used for feeding programs in primary schools so kids can continue to go to school and get at least one basic meal each day. We’re currently working with our partner BrightPoint for Children to establish feeding programs in every school in every 410 Bridge community. No small task… Stay tuned for more on that soon.

A Note from Our Founder

If we’ve spent any time together, you’ve probably heard me this before: pay attention to who walks through the front door.

That was some early advice from my friend, Lanny, and it held the test of time. It’s important to keep a lookout for people suddenly crossing your path – God just might be introducing you to someone special. So, when Chris Joiner walked through our front door, I paid attention.

In 2021, Chris reached out just to have a conversation. Over a few breakfasts, Chris and I discussed our shared passion for changing the way the West church engages the poor. At the time, Chris was working for another non-profit organization, but it quickly became clear that we both sought to create a lasting, meaningful impact on the lives of the poor.
