Smiling–A Universal Language!

Last week, a team of nine from Frazer United Methodist Church, in Montgomery, AL, just returned from a great visit to the Haiti Deaf Camp. A highlight of the trip was the play time with the children, coloring and face painting. The theme of the visit with the kids was “Smiling- A universal language for Creole, English and Sign Language!”

We gathered information for the deaf camp census, getting to know representatives from 42 of the households. We learned about their education, employment, family members and were excited to hear that all of those we spoke to were interested in moving to the permanent community we are hoping to build for them.

Another highlight was visiting St. Vincent’s School, where some of the deaf children in the camp attend classes. The school was damaged during the earthquake but has been repaired and is back up and running.

The biggest thrill of the week was connecting with a local church that we learned provides sign language interpretation in all services and 40-50 has deaf as regular attendees. We were excited to hear that such a strong core from the deaf camp are believers and we look forward to worshiping at that church during our next visit!
