Mission Possible: Five Ways to Fundraise for Your Mission Trip

Fundraising is difficult. There’s no doubt about it. Even though it can be awkward and time consuming, it is totally worth it! Don’t let fundraising stand in the way of you and a trip to participate in what God is doing around the world. Instead, see it as a way to bring people into the global story of how God is working.

There are a multitude of ways to fundraise for your trip and it is not one size fits all. Whether you want to raise money in person, sell things, or host events, there are fundraising opportunities to fit everyone.

1. Sell Something

Consider selling t-shirts, coffee mugs, or handmade crafts. These can be great ways to express creativity while raising money for your trip.

If you enjoy cooking, make food from the culture you are traveling to and sell it! If you have lots of recipes to share, design a cookbook (themed around your upcoming trip, perhaps?) and sell copies of that to friends and family.

If you wouldn’t describe yourself as creative, check out other local fundraising opportunities. You could sell candles, fudge, Krispy Kreme donuts, and more.

2. Take on a Side Hustle

Offer time and services to make some extra money. You could mow lawns, walk dogs, babysit, or clean for people in exchange for a donation towards your trip. Additionally, if you have the time, you could get a part time job and put the money towards your trip.

3. Host Events

Another fun way to raise support and get people involved is to host events. There are a multitude of events you could host, from movie nights to golf tournaments to yard sales or car washes. These are great ways to involve friends, family, church family, and your larger community in joining you in your ministry!

4. Talk to People

Talk to people about your trip. This sounds a little obvious, but you never know who God might use to provide the funds necessary for your trip. You can talk to people one-on-one and consider seeking out an opportunity to speak to your church family (whether that means the entire congregation or a small group). Most believers are eager to see another’s desire to serve the Lord. Make sure you thank your supporters and follow up with them after the trip.

5. Write Support Letters

Writing a support letter is a simple and effective way to gain support. You could choose to hand write each support letter, but an easier way is to type a general letter and add any personal touches after it has been printed.

This process can easily be completed in a few simple steps:

  1. Start with an introduction about who you are and why you want to go on this trip.
  2. Next, explain a little about where you are going, what you are looking forward to and what you may be doing in the community (it’s okay if this is vague. The visited community decides what trip participants do, so you won’t find out until closer to your trip).
  3. Be sure to include when you are going and how much money you need to raise by the specific date.
  4. Lastly, add prayer requests and ways to send financial support or contact you.
  5. Mail your support letters or distribute them in person.

Be selective about your list of supporters. Although you do not want to limit who God can use, you also want to make sure your request for support is appropriate. If you work in an office, consider giving letters only to the coworkers you feel closest to.

After Your Trip

An important part of the fundraising process occurs after the trip has ended. Follow up with those who offered prayers and financial support. Chances are that at least a few people donated towards your trip because they won’t be going on a trip of their own. Take the time to tell them about it. If you had the opportunity to meet with people or speak with church members before your trip, seek them out after your return to give them an idea of the ways their prayers and support helped you.
