On February 10th Kurt and I headed to Haiti with our friends from Water Missions International. Our purpose in going to Haiti was two fold – First, to find ministry opportunities where The 410 Bridge can mobilize people and resources to engage in meaningful immediate relief efforts. Second, to find strong indigenous leaders in rural areas of Haiti where we can apply our model of community development for a long-term ministry presence.
We spent five days in and around the capital city of Port Au Prince and saw some of the most effected and hardest hit areas of the country. The amount of infrastructural devastation and human suffering is unexplainable. Over 200,000 people have lost their lives and over 1 million people are displaced, many of whom are living under sheets and tarps in camps spread throughout the city. Many churches, orphanages, and schools in and around the city have been totally destroyed.
As we met with local pastors and leaders, God opened up several potential opportunities for The 410 Bridge to unite and mobilize the body of Christ to serve those in need in Haiti. As we consider our relief effort, we are looking at unique and innovative ways to offer immediate assistance while empowering the people we serve to meet their own needs and begin the process of rehabilitation. In the coming days we will be providing specific opportunities for churches, organizations, and individuals to plug in and serve the people of Haiti.
