From Sunken to Safe: Celebrating New Latrines at Kamaku Primary School!

We’re thrilled to share some exciting news from Kamaku Primary School in Ulu Community! Thanks to the generosity of our donors and partners, a brand-new latrine block has been completed, providing much-needed sanitation facilities to young students.

The Before

Earlier this year, Kenya was hit with unusually heavy rainfall, causing widespread flooding that damaged critical infrastructure across the country. Among the affected areas was Ulu Community, where one of the school’s latrine blocks collapsed and literally sunk into the ground, while the other one was severely damaged. It left the children and teachers in need of safe, sanitary restroom facilities.

The After

Today, we’re happy to report that the students now have a safe, private, and accessible latrine. The newly constructed latrine block is designated for children in pre-primary through grade 3, serving around 50 students, while older students and teachers will use the existing facility.

Importantly, boys and girls now have separate toilets for privacy, contributing to a healthier school environment.

This project came together with incredible support from the Ulu community members, who were hands-on from start to finish. Families and volunteers cleared the construction site, dug the pit, and provided sand, truly embodying the spirit of collaboration and unity that defines our work together.

Construction began on September 17th, and, after weeks of hard work, the new latrines were completed on October 11th. To celebrate this important milestone, parents, community leaders, and school staff gathered for an official commissioning on October 17th, marking a proud moment of joy and accomplishment for the entire community.

With these new latrines, the students of Kamaku Primary School can now look forward to a cleaner, safer learning environment. This project has not only restored a crucial facility but also reinforced the value of community partnership and the impact that comes from collective action.

Thank you to everyone who supported this project! Your contributions have made a meaningful difference in the lives of these children and their families.

Together, we continue to rebuild, restore, and create brighter futures in Kenya.
