A Few Words About My Trip by Lonnie Starks

Here are some pictures and a few words from one of our recent trip participants, Lonnie Starks from Little Brasstown Church in North Carolina:

At the Water Tank

The trip!  What can I say at this time?  Amazing?  Life changing?  Unbelievable?  Yes, but how to put the 9 days into words is beyond me at the moment.  I will be processing this for a long time.  I will say this much.  Sleeping on airplanes is different, or maybe it’s an effect of the trip itself because I dreamed snapshots of all that happened in Kandaria.  It was unlike any sleep I have known before except in 1960 when our family went to Fort Walton beach, Florida for the first time.  I dreamed of waves for a few days following after spending so much time in the ocean.

I know this much.  Although the people look very poor on the outside, the ones I met and got to know were abundantly rich in love, generosity, and communion of the spirit.  We were instantly honored guests and friends.  Their attitude of giving, sharing, and humility is more than anything I have experienced ‘til now.  I pray that it is contagious.

In 2021, Chris reached out just to have a conversation. Over a few breakfasts, Chris and I discussed our shared passion for changing the way the West church engages the poor. At the time, Chris was working for another non-profit organization, but it quickly became clear that we both sought to create a lasting, meaningful impact on the lives of the poor.

As we begin this exciting journey as an organization, I want to share more about who I am, my heart for our mission, and where we are headed this year.
